2009 CYCLING CRASH VICTIMS TO BE HONORED AT EARTH DAY EVENT Boise Bicycle Project and Univ. of Phoenix Partner to Promote Awareness, Safety
MERIDIAN - The Boise Bicycle Project (BBP) and University of Phoenix have partnered for an Earth Day weekend event that aims to bring greater awareness to cycling safety and honor the three Treasure Valley cyclists (Jim Chu, Thomas Bettger and Kevin Pavlis) who were killed in bike vs. vehicle crashes last spring.
The event runs Saturday April 24, from 10a.m. until 2p.m. Morning events include multiple activities for children including a helmet safety check, bike rodeo and obstacle course. The BBP will offer bike tune-ups for a donation to the Boise cycling charity, and will collect bicycle donations for refurbishing and redistribution through the organization. A limited number of refurbished/rebuilt bikes from the BBP will be available for purchase.
"We spend countless hours fixing and distributing bikes out of our the shop in Boise, so when we heard about an opportunity co-host an event in Meridian, we jumped at the chance," said Jimmy Hallyburton, executive director of Boise Bicycle Project. "As more and more people turn to cycling as a primary form of transportation, it is so important to make sure information about cycling safety and awareness is available. We're excited for the chance to reach a little further beyond our walls."
At 12:15, a bicycle procession will gather for a short ride to a tree planting ceremony on University of Phoenix's campus. The community is invited to participate in the procession and help plant a tree in memory of Chu, Bettger and Pavlis.
Various elected officials including Ada County Commissioners Tilman and Yzagguire and Eagle's acting Mayor Huffaker plan to participate in the tree planting ceremony, as will some of the family members of last year's crash victims.
"We feel this is truly a critical time of the year to promote safety on our roadways as more and more cyclists are hitting the roadways with the warmer weather," said Bill Bach, campus director for University of Idaho, Idaho Campus. "We are glad to have the space to sponsor this important event, support the BBP and honor cyclists across the Valley in this way."
